Q. Is the Salem Historical Commission the same as Historic Salem, Inc.? A. No Salem Historical Commission The Salem Historical Commission is a volunteer board of Salem residents appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Council. The Commission is the official agent of municipal government responsible for community-wide historic preservation planning and for regulatory design review within designated local historic districts. A local historic district is an area with specific boundaries that has been recognized for its historical and architectural significance and so designated by a vote of the City Council. Historic Salem, Inc. Since its inception in 1944, Historic Salem, Incorporated has operated as a non-profit architectural preservation organization. HSI's Board of Directors is, at any given time, comprised of concerned individuals whose cumulative professional and personal experience have allowed it to serve for over five decades as Salem's architectural/historical resource and advocate. HSI's mission is to ensure that the historic resources of Salem, which are the key to its identity, its quality of life, and its economic vitality, are preserved for future generations and that new development compliments the historic character of the city.
