Dr. Martha McNamara is Director of the New England Arts and Architecture
Program in the Art Department at Wellesley College and specializes in
American cultural history and New England History. Her research focuses
on public buildings and how they are vested with political and cultural
authority.
In particular, she finds that the architecture of Massachusetts courthouses
dating from 1750-1850 holds clues to how lawyers and architects succeeded
in professionalizing their fields. She is the author of From
Tavern to Courthouse: Architecture and Ritual in American Law, 1658-1860
(Johns Hopkins, 2004).
Made possible with support from the Lowell Institute. This lecture is
part of the McIntire Lecture Series (Jan. 13 – Feb. 20, 2007).
