Preservation Mass, a statewide preservation organization based in Boston, presented the Charles W. Elliot Award to Historic Salem, Inc. at their annual dinner and awards night in Boston Thursday, May 7, 2004. Historic Salem, Inc. is celebrating its The award was received by Patti Kelleher, President of the 800 member organization. The award cited the "Exceptional Vision and Excellent Planning" that was exemplified by the organization. Ms. Kelleher, in receiving the award, cited the excellent support the organization had received from the community and city in carrying out its mission, which is " ...to ensure that the historic resources of Salem, which are the key to its identity, its quality of life, and its economic vitality, are preserved for future generations and that new development compliments the historic character of the city", through " Preservation, Education , Advocacy and Partnership " (a full explanation is found on www.historicsalem.org). The dinner was attended by over 300 persons from the Massachusetts statewide historic preservation community, and included such notables as the Secretary of State William F. Galvin. Past Presidents, officers, Board Members and others representing Historic Salem Inc. were also on hand to observe the festivities. Salem's Mayor Stanley Usovicz spoke of the impact that Historic Salem, Inc. has had on the historic city. The award was proceeded by a brief slide presentation of Historic Salem, Inc.'s 60 years of involvement in the historic city, starting in 1944 with the saving of the c-1642 Witch (Corwin) House. Stanley M. Smith, a past President of Historic Salem, Inc., was separately recognized by Preservation Mass's President, James Igoe, for his leadership of Historic Boston for over 20 years.
